Warm-up Routine Tips

In this video, Co-founder and Co-executive Director Sarah Tindall walks us through her tips for warming up for her practice session. First, journal. Journaling helps you to "connect the dots" between your different musical tendencies and goals. Journaling throughout the day helps guide you through your practice for the most efficient and productive practice possible. Second, start your practice with the basics. Playing simple techniques, such as open strings, allows you to really connect with your instrument in preparation for the harder music you will practice later in your practice session. Additionally, simple techniques allow you the brain power to really listen to what you are doing and ensure that you are playing as accurately and as fully as possible right from the start of your practice session. Third, play 5 minute scales, or long tones. Play the most basic scale in whole notes at 50 BPM, incorporating your breath to increase awareness. Write down your tendencies based on that scale. Any type of long tones or basic exercises will also work; find what works best for you!
