How to Practice Phrasing with Kaylee Bontrager
In this video, violinist Kaylee Bontrager walks us through how to practice musical phrasing.
First, know what you want your phrase to look like. Notice the high points and low points of each phrase, important intervals, and how certain notes make you feel.
Second, use your musical toolbox to bring out to detail your phrase. Vary tools such as your vibrato, bow speed, and shifts.
Additionally, practice singing or speaking your phrase, listen to your favorite musician's recordings of your piece, and finally, experiment!
Remember, the process of practicing musical phrasing can often be confusing and overwhelming, so trust your instinct, be patient, and experiment!
